Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario

Everyone in Ontario should be able to live, work and participate in society without discrimination or harassment. The Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario (HRTO) is a legal mechanism where people who feel they have lost their human rights under the Ontario Human Rights Code can seek redress. Whether it relates to jobs, homes, goods or advertising, or participation in public life, fair treatment depends on it.

How the Human Rights Tribunal Works

The HRTO considers applications from individuals who have faced discrimination and harassment under the morphed protections: race, sex, disability, creed, sexual orientation, age, family status and so on. It means applying, mediating, hearing and possibly obtaining relief (such as money or changes in practices).

Common Human Rights Issues We Handle

We act for applicants and respondents at CRH Legal Services. Common matters include:

  • Workplace discrimination and harassment.
  • Refusal of rental based on discriminatory factors.
  • Different treatment in the provision of services or facilities.
  • Discrimination against people with disabilities occurs in the workplace, in schools, and in housing.
  • Reprisals for bringing attention to human rights.

Our Approach to Human Rights Tribunal Matters

We know that these cases are complex and painful. We assist our clients by strategically preparing applications (or responses) and necessary supporting evidence, and advocating for the client at all stages from mediation and/or hearings. The need to be aware that your voice is heard is essential, as it will earn you respect and ensure your rights are upheld throughout that strategy.
